Police want to warn homeowners about construction scams going on around the area.

The Prairie du Chien Police Department says it has gotten complaints about one group of scammers around southwestern Wisconsin.

Officers say groups like these will drop by with what they say is some extra asphalt from a previous job that they can use to repair your driveway.

Police say legitimate construction companies do not make door-to-door sales calls.

Officers say you should be wary of offers that sound too good to be true.

I am a snowbird who lives in Florida in the winter. In February, we were approached by a driveway scammer who said he had left-over asphalt and would do our driveway. We refused. The neighbor was also approached and they took advantage of an elderly man who said he didn't own the place and would have to check with the owner. In the meantime, the trucks put down a new driveway and then tried to get an exhorbitant amount of money from the owner who told the man on the phone not to do anything with the driveway. They threatened to destroy the driveway, but the law enforcement was alerted and they never came back. There were several trucks with different names on the trucks.
