Could I get your opinion on a Dell Model D400 laptop? Specs include: Intel Pentium M Processor, 1.40 GHz Intel Pentium, Windows XP Pro, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, 56K2 v. 92 internal modem, Standard Intel Pro/Wireless, Intel AC97, one integrated speaker, 40 GB Hard Drive, 512MB RAM, comes with Antivirus, Antispyware, New Windows XP Installation, office apps, and more. Listed for $325...is this a good deal? I am not sure how old this computer is...but am told it is in good shape. I am just looking for basic use. I would really appreciate your input!

Hi Mr. Technology. Here is question. Which brand of computer do you recommend buying? Dell, Gateway, PDS? Is there a major difference? Thanks.

I have read mixed reviews on those cell phone stickers. I haven't seen any evidence that they cause harm and I haven't really seen any evidence that they actually work either. With RF signals Height is the biggest factor... the higher you are and the higher the cell tower is makes the biggest difference, power is not as important in most cases. However, it all depends on what type of problems you are having with your phone. I guess if you really aren't getting good service you could try a sticker thing and see if it helps but my best advice would be to contact your cell provider they may have some better solutions.

The message that pops up and asks you if you want to send something is not designed to fix the problem for you. Generally that box will pop up after some software on your computer crashes and all it's doing is sending the error codes to the developers so they can track problems. It is designed so that software developers can fix ongoing issues eventually. Depending on what web broswer your using and how your closing your software will depend on the answer. If it's a constant problem you may need to reinstall your web browswer or perform an upgrade which might address the problem.

As far as deleting your information you could just format your hard-drive (look up directions online) you could also take it to looke Computer Wizards or Ram Technologies in Eau Claire and they can help you. However, your best bet would be to remove the hard-drive and physically distroy it throw it out. You could still sell the computer w/o the Hard Drive or you could install a new Hard Drive and do a fresh Operating System install so it's ready to be used but then none of your personal information would be left on the drive. Like I said if you were really worried about it contact a local computer repair shop they can help you out!

We are starting a user group focused around teaching others to use high end computers and software to be able to do video editing, music creation, podcasting, photography, and other more modern media focused technology. We plan on educating not only youth but anyone that wants to learn and participate, and give back to our community. We will be holding our first meeting on January 5th, we will be discussing all the technology we will be using, and getting an idea of what areas of those technologies we will focus on. There is no cost, other than your time and effort. We are constantly told that without corporate backing, you can't be a writer and publish a book, you can't be a musician and make an album, you can't make a movie without Hollywood. We want to introduce an idea that those models of media are dying, and the future is in the content from general people. We would like to invide Tech Spot to see what we are doing, if they are interested, please contact me.

TOOLS menu > INTERNET OPTIONS drop down > CLEAR HISTORY at the bottom of the screen. The best way to save those addresses is to use your favorites and not rely on the dropdown thing.

The show is great! Always need help. I have a question. Is there a way to delete internet addresses that maybe have a typo or you typed in wrong address. I hate having to scroll thru non existent ones. I know they will be deleted off the list with time if you don't use them. These are the addresses that automatically stay in memory everytime you type in an address - above the internet page. Says Address on left side and GO on right side.

DVD recorders/burners come in two forms: DVD-R and DVD R. Normally I would suggest checking to make sure you have the proper disk for your machine as most of them are not backwards compatible for recording... However, you say it won't play disks either and you have tried cleaning it so it could be a whole number of problems. Here are some examples: Laser alignment, faulty laser, faulty drive motor (for spinning disk), or bad electronic component (resistors, transistors, etc.). Regardless, you'll probably have to either replace the unit or have it fixed by a professional.

I have a DVD/VCR recorder. The DVD (only got to utilize it 5-6 times) now will not recognize DVD-R or RW's to initialize them for recording. It is a Samsung brand. Have had it 2 years now. It even will not recognize already recorded DVD's that we have done in the past. We cleaned the "eye" and recorder with cleaning kits we have gotten for it. What could be the problem?

Good point frank! We need folks to start submitting photos to our gallary. Take a picture of something technology related: working on computer, science project, playing video game, fixing something, messing with your Ipod or anything you can think of! Get Creative! Simply subbmit your photo to our gallary so everyone can see.

Your photo gallery is weak. One photo does not constitute a gallery.

You'll still be able to use those VCRs because most digital and HDTV sets will still have an analog tuner for the 3/4 channel option. However, if your using an antenna to pull in your digital channels you'll probably need to connect the VCR using the RCA Video Jacks (Yellow, Red, & White) instead of the coax connector (round screw on) because usually the new digital signal won't pass through the old analog equipment like. Good Question!

Posted by: Bob Location: Webster on Sep 18, 2007 at 09:55 AM
What is going to happen to the large number of VCR's after the HD switch to digital TV signals? I suspect the ch 3/4 outputs won't work and there headed for the junk pile.

Anonymous - A BluRay Disk (BD) is a new media format developed by Sony. They are capable of holding about 8 times the amount of data as a DVD, so much higher quality video can be stored. The picture quality on retail BD movies is full high definition 1080p, whereas the picture quality stored on regular DVDs is 480i (the same as regular, non-HD television). The improvement in picture quality between BDs and DVDs is astounding - but only if you have an HDTV to take advantage of it. There are actually two formats of next gen media disks in the market right now - the aforementioned BluRay Disks and HD-DVDs (produced by Toshiba). The difference between the two in reality is pretty minuscule and the formats are NOT compatible with each other (although both BD players and HD-DVD players will play regular DVDs as well). If you are looking to get into the next gen movie scene, it may pay off to hold off for a bit yet to get a clearer picture of which format winds up winning.

I hear about blue ray disks sometimes but I have no idea what that is. Is it similar to a dvd? Help, Andrew!
