Haiti Project Medical Mission Fundraiser

The Haiti Project Medical Mission, a local organization that provides medical care to Haitians in need, is hosting a fundraising event on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Volume One and the Local Store from 6 – 9 pm. The event will include live music, refreshments, and a silent auction.

You’ve heard it in the news, listened to conflicting reports, and know it’s a hot-button issue, but where do you begin to understand what’s really happening with global climate change? Are you hearing all this information on something you know is important, but find yourself wondering, “As a citizen, what can I do?” Join a local chemistry professor as you discuss factors that affect average temperature, interpret global data trends, and learn how to become an active and engaged citizen. This course is perfect for anyone who is interested in what all this news means in the larger “science vs. politics” debate. Explore the combination of the science behind climate change and the potential human behaviors that influence it. Engage in discussion surrounding current political policies and opportunities to implement change.

L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire
“American School Girl” features a series of acrylic and mixed-media paintings that represents Sue Cranston’s version of childhood experiences for a young girl. It combines her memories of growing up in Wisconsin, her experiences teaching in the classroom, and her life as a daughter and mother. Exhibit may be viewed during regular library hours.

Charcoal Drawing Class (DeVona Brodt)

Wednesday and Thursday, October 11 and 12 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Ever wonder how those beautiful Michelangelo sketches are made? Artist Dee Brodt will help you unlock your inner Michelangelo by introducing you to the basic tools and techniques of drawing with charcoal in this four-hour class (broken up into two classes) aimed at beginners and those with little drawing experience, but all are welcome. You will leave class with your own “masterpiece” after only four hours – don’t be surprised when you unlock some previously hidden talents. All materials will be provided along with a complimentary beverage and snacks. Class size is limited to 12 people. Cost $55/person.

Open House and Reception: Thursday, September 28 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. 
This exhibit is a retrospective of the artwork of Hugh Mandelert, which has been generously loaned to the Heyde Center from the private collections of community members. The theme of the exhibit “Art and Addiction” serves as a catalyst for a community exploration and a dialogue of chemical dependency issues in the Chippewa Valley, hopefully leading to second-chances. Hugh Mandelert’s status as a “favorite son” and a recovering alcoholic can help decrease the stigma our society puts on people with chemical dependency; foster conversations that are too often kept behind closed doors; lift up the power of compassion, relationship and community support; replace castigation with rehabilitation; and explore ways to help each other artfully move forward one step at a time. Participants in the Chippewa County Drug Court will be exhibiting their artwork in the galleries on the third floor. No cost for admission to the exhibit.
