Kardemimmit Concert

Event Dates and Times

9/28/2017 - Starts: 7:00 PM
Phillips Recital Hall, Haas Fine Arts, UWEC, Eau Claire
The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host the award-winning Finnish folk group, Kardemimmit, on September 28th as part of the university’s ongoing musical, scholarly and international programming.
Kardemimmit are four young women playing the ancient Finnish national instrument, kantele. The band members are Maija Pokela, Jutta Rahmel, Anna Wegelius and Leeni Wegelius. Alongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles, singing has a big part in Kardemimmit’s musical universe where original pieces with a modern approach still have a strong foundation in Finnish, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions.
The kantele is the Finnish version of an instrument known throughout the world as either a zither or lap harp. The kantele - a plucked stringed instrument of the worldwide zither family - is a traditional folk music instrument that has been played in Finland and other Baltic countries since pre-historic times.

The concert, which is free and open to the public is sponsored by UW-Eau Claire’s Council on Internationalization and Global Engagement. For more information, contact CIGE at cige@uwec.edu.

Open House and Reception: Thursday, September 28 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
This exhibit is a retrospective of the artwork of Hugh Mandelert, which has been generously loaned to the Heyde Center from the private collections of community members. The theme of the exhibit “Art and Addiction” serves as a catalyst for a community exploration and a dialogue of chemical dependency issues in the Chippewa Valley, hopefully leading to second-chances. Hugh Mandelert’s status as a “favorite son” and a recovering alcoholic can help decrease the stigma our society puts on people with chemical dependency; foster conversations that are too often kept behind closed doors; lift up the power of compassion, relationship and community support; replace castigation with rehabilitation; and explore ways to help each other artfully move forward one step at a time. Participants in the Chippewa County Drug Court will be exhibiting their artwork in the galleries on the third floor. No cost for admission to the exhibit.
