UW-Eau Claire hosts AIDS Memorial Quilt

Date(s): 12/8/2014 Date(s): 12/9/2014 Date(s): 12/10/2014 Date(s): 12/11/2014

9 a.m.-9 p.m.

UW-Eau Claire
Sections of the internationally celebrated AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on view from Dec. 8-11 in the Ojibwe Ballroom of Davies Center.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt, a 54-ton handmade tapestry that stands as a memorial to more than 94,000 individuals lost to AIDS, began with a single 3 x 6 foot panel created in San Francisco in 1987. Today, the Quilt is composed of more than 48,000 panels, each one commemorating the life of someone who has died of AIDS. These panels come from all over the world and have been sewn by hundreds of thousands of those who have lost loved ones to AIDS. The Quilt was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and currently resides in its entirety at the Smithsonian Museum. UW-Eau Claire is honored to be hosting 46 panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

"We are raising awareness not only of our country's history regarding HIV/AIDS, but our ongoing inability to report on infectious diseases without stigmatizing targeted groups of people, for example, Africans and Ebola," said Chris Jorgenson, coordinator of the Women's & LGBTQ Resource Center. "The AIDS Memorial Quilt is the perfect entrance into a conversation that asks us to reevaluate the magnetism of sensationalist media reports that fail to adhere to the actual science of infectious diseases."

This free display of The AIDS Memorial Quilt is sponsored by the Women's & LGBTQ Resource Center, Housing & Residence Life, University Centers and the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. Visitors may attend between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. from Dec. 8-11.

For more information on the upcoming display at UW-Eau Claire, please contact Chris Jorgenson at 715-836-2693 or jorgencj@uwec.edu. For more information on the AIDS Memorial Quilt, please visit aidsquilt.org or call the national headquarters at (404) 688-5500.

Ask a Scientist: 'From Sputnik to Shuttle: True Accounts from Two Generations of Rocket Scientists'

Date(s): 12/17/2014

7-8 p.m.

Acoustic Café 505 S. Barstow, Eau Claire
Wednesday, December 17, Realityworks co-founder Rick Jurmain will present “From Sputnik to Shuttle: True Accounts from Two Generations of Rocket Scientists.” The presentation will take place at the Acoustic Café in downtown Eau Claire from 7-8 p.m.

Like father, like son, Jurmain followed in his old man’s footsteps when he took a position at NASA in the 1980s. The former cadet will describe his experiences, triumphs, and struggles within the space and aeronautics powerhouse and how it shaped his ever-growing interest in engineering.

That rising passion was a segue into his career with Realityworks, a company based in Eau Claire that sells educational technology to schools, including RealCare Baby, an interactive infant developed by Jurmain himself.

43th ANNUAL NATIVITY PAGEANT

Date(s): 12/6/2014

7:00 PM

Queen of The Holy Rosary Shrine Necedah WI Located one mile East of Necedah on HWY 2154646
The Nativity Pageant at the Queen of the Holy Rosary Mediatrix of Peace Shrine in Necedah has been performed each year since 1971.
This accurate and historic presentation of the Nativity Story is staged outdoors with a large cast in colorful costumes, along with many animals.
The re-enacted Story begins in Nazareth where it was announced that all were to travel to Bethlehem for a census. It then portrays the cold four day/three-night journey to Bethlehem and the difficulties Mary and Joseph encounter in that crowded city. Finally, it re-lives the Birth of Jesus in a cave outside of the city.

Everyone is welcome to be part of this beautiful Christmas experience.

Dress warmly for the outdoor weather.

Admission and refreshments afterward are FREE.
