For centuries, astronomers have dreamed about the possibility of planets orbiting other stars, but until recently the planets which make up our own solar system were the only planets known. Now, over 1,500 extrasolar planets have been discovered and more are continually being found. In this class, you will learn about the high technology methods astronomers use to discover these planets and how they can determine their properties. We will discuss what these planets are like and compare them to the planets in our own solar system. We will conclude with a discussion of what these new planet discoveries tell us about the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. This class will prepare you to understand the news reports that are sure to be coming in the next few years of this exciting and rapidly-developing area of science.

Draw Daily: Art Journaling Basics and Beyond

Date(s): 10/22/2015 Date(s): 10/29/2015 Date(s): 11/5/2015 Date(s): 11/12/2015

6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cultivate your creativity through art journaling – the special place where words and art come together. Throughout the centuries, artists have kept notebooks where they sketched, experimented, practiced and then recorded and shared their creative journey. But art journaling is not just for artists – it can be an amazing tool for self-discovery and personal fulfillment.

Whatever your reason for keeping an art journal, you will have the opportunity to: explore the elements of art and principles of design; experiment with art techniques and new ideas; try out various media and processes; discover and document your own creative process; and delve deeper into the complexities of art.

You may choose to share and discuss your journal with other workshop participants through a closed Facebook Group (optional). And you’ll leave with a workbook filled with inspirations and suggestions that will help keep you in the daily habit of drawing and creating.

Build a Classic Finnish Masonry Heater

Date(s): 8/14/2015

10:00 am-12:30 pm

Driftless Folk School, Viola, WI 54664
Masonry heaters originated in Northern Europe where winters were cold and fuel wasn’t always plentiful. The natural response? Create a wood-fired presence that was at once incredibly efficient and highly attractive, capable of generating abundant heat and ideal for cooking/baking. Masonry heaters are built with fire bricks and utilize their high mass to radiate heat for 12 – 24 hours, a feature which means they only need to be fired once or twice per day. Students in this course will build a classic Finnish masonry heater (approx 36″ wide x 31″ deep and 72″ high). This masonry heater will be built with a Solid Rock Masonry Heat Core System. We will finish the outside of the heater in 4” solid concrete blocks with a 3 part plaster system. This heater will also have a heated bench and a side chimney.Students will experience building and discussing heater design, sizing options, brick selection, cooking oven integration, door and hardware installation, code considerations, and tool use.
Class cost $425. Material cost $25 for resource packet including plans, links, material list etc.
Lunch fixings provided. Work Clothes-come prepared to get dirty with bricks and mortar. Bring your own safety glasses, gloves and ear plugs.
