Natural Building: Straw-Clay Walls.

Date(s): 7/16/2015, 7/17/2015, 7/18/2015

9:00 am-4:30 pm

Driftless Folk School, Hillsboro, WI
The natural building style of Straw/Clay infill (a.k.a. “slip-straw”) is an alternative to conventional insulation such as fiberglass or foam products. Straw/clay performs very well in our Midwest climate, and is different than the better known straw bale wall because straw/clay builders add a slurry of clay to the loose straw fibers to creating a mold resistant, “breathable” wall. Typically, a straw/clay wall is plastered using clay and/or lime, though wood siding can also be used as long as ventilation and vapor concerns have been addressed. In this hands-on course, we will cover all aspects of frame preparation, sourcing the materials and tools needed, mixing the infill, forming walls, and the packing or “stuffing” of the infill mix. We will also demonstrate natural plasters and give tours of on-site examples. Straw/clay is suitable for homes and outbuildings.

Enjoy free yoga this summer at Phoenix Park!

A local group of yoga teachers are giving the community the gift of free yoga this summer. Misty Ross, Lorelei Ernster and Wendy Oberg came together based on a shared vision of creating a yoga community and believe that yoga should be accessible to everybody and every body, which is why they are offering free classes taught at a gentle/beginner level. They chose this location as the area has become a central gathering space for the community and choose times that were in conjunction with The Sounds Like Summer Concert Series and the Eau Claire Downtown Farmer’s Market. Volume One and Tangled Up in Hue have made it possible for them to provide this service for the area. You can find more details on the event as well as weather cancellations on the Chippewa Valley Yoga Community Facebook page www.facebok.com/groups/cvyogacommunity.
