Author B.J. Hollars

Date(s): 11/12/2014

7:00-8:00 pm

Fall Creek Public Library, Fall Creek, WI
Award-winning author and UW-Eau Claire English professor B.J. Hollars will discuss his new book, Dispatches from the Drownings: Reporting the Fiction of Non-Fiction. Disturbed by stories of drownings in the river behind his home in Eau Claire, Hollars combed the archives of local newspapers only to discover vast discrepancies in articles about the deaths. In homage to Michael Lesy's cult classic, Wisconsin Death Trip, Hollars pairs reports from late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century journalists with fictional versions, creating a hybrid text complete with facts, lies, and a wide range of blurring in between.

7:00-8:00 pm

Fall Creek Public Library, Fall Creek, WI
The nutritionist, author, and proprietor of Karen R. Hurd Nutritional Practice, LLC in Fall Creek will present “Perfumes and Fragrances: Passionate But Perilous.” Perfumes are pervasive in our society. Everything from dish soap to shampoo to aftershave is scented. In this lecture, we’ll explore why fragrances make us feel good, dipping into chemistry and biology to do so. We’ll then take a look at the short- and long-term effects of fragrances on the body. Nutritional notes for combating some negative effects will also be included in our examination. Fragrances are all around us, but we rarely think of their effect. They have a bigger impact on our health than we realize! Join us as we explore scientifically why.

We are the Willows

Date(s): 10/4/2014

7pm

The Volume One Gallery Located inside the Local Store at the Volume One World Headquarters, 205 N. Dewey St. Eau Claire, 54703
We Are The Willows are an orchestral indie rock band based out of South Minneapolis. The 6-piece ensemble features songwriter/frontman Peter Miller’s unique countertenor voice and guitar, supported by Jeremiah Satterthwaite (guitar/banjo), Leah Ottman (violin/voice/keys), Hilary James (cello/voice/keys), Travis Collins (bass), and Stephen Lindquist (drums/voice). We Are The Willows craft dynamic, intimate songs with instruments and voices combining to create energetic rhythms and intricate melodies. Their heartfelt arrangements evoke shared nostalgic feelings of love and loss.

The band has recently recorded their second full-length album, Picture [Portrait], based off of 350 letters written by Peter’s grandfather to his grandmother while he was stationed in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. Their correspondence inspired Peter to explore themes of family, separation, life, death, and identity in a time of national and personal crisis. The songs communicate complex ideas delivered with pop-sensible charm. His grandmother loves this album. You just might too.

We Are The Willows have received kind words from PASTE Magazine, Daytrotter, Magnet Magazine, 89.3 The Current, City Pages, and VitaMN. They continue to have fun playing their music throughout Minnesota, the Midwest, and the wide world beyond. They hope to be the first band to perform on the moon.

.

Eleva-Strum Central High School Auditorium November 14 & 15 at 7 pm, November 16 at 2 pm
This is Eleva-Strum Central High School's annual musical production. It will include high school students, elementary students, parents and community members.

Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and book by Joseph Stein, set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. It is based on Tevye and his Daughters by Sholem Aleichem. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each one's choice of husband moves further away from the customs of her faith—and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

The Oxford, 1814 Oxford Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54703
The Eau Claire Children’s Theatre will present SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL October 3-5 and 10-11, at The Oxford, 1814 Oxford Avenue, Eau Claire.
The Wayside School was supposed to be one story high, with thirty classrooms side by side. Instead, it was built sideways, with thirty one-classroom stories. (The builder said he was sorry!) Maybe that’s why all kinds of unusual things happen at Wayside during this hilarious play based on Louis Sachar’s popular book.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, October 3 and 10, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 4 and 11, at 1:30 p.m.; and Sunday, October 5 at 1:30pm. 8am-5pm

Eau Claire, Wi
6th Annual Expressions in Wood Expo
Formerly Wisconsin Woodturners Expo
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, October 25th and 26th, 2014

The 6th Annual Expressions in Wood Expo will be at the Plaza Hotel & Suites, 1202 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on Saturday and Sunday, October 25th and 26th, 2014. This event is presented jointly by Chippewa Valley Woodturners Guild and West Wisconsin Woodcarvers Guild.

Hours will be 8 AM – 6 PM on Saturday and 8 AM – 5 PM on Sunday. You will enjoy lathe woodturning demonstrations, exhibitors, vendors and an Instant Art Gallery. A Silent Auction will be held for supporting our youth outreach program.

We will also hold our “Learn-to-Turn” woodturning workshops for youths and beginning woodturners which was such an overwhelming success last year. There will also be hands-on demonstrations of woodcarving by the West Wisconsin Woodcarvers Guild. This will be a great opportunity to learn the basics of woodturning and woodcarving.

Having been recently at the art show at Springfest in Chippewa Falls in April, many of the same artisans will be presenting at this event. This will be a great opportunity to buy your Christmas gifts early.

The professional demonstrators this year will be Allen Jensen of Loveland, CO and Tim Heil of Gem Lake, MN. Also, this year we will have Bob Boettcher from Minnesota Woodturners; Barry Grill and Mark Palma from the Chippewa Valley Woodturners. Wayne Dubberke from West Wisconsin Woodcarvers Guild will also demonstrate woodcarving. Many vendors will be performing woodturning and woodcarving tasks in their booths.

General admission is $5.00 per day to the vendor, exhibitor and instant gallery areas and $50.00 for one day of demonstrations or $110.00 for both days of demonstrations, which includes the exhibitor, vendor and instant gallery area. The two-day admission includes a full set of DVDs ($30 value) commemorating the proceedings.

Chippewa Valley Woodturners Guild is an active member of the American Association of Woodturners based in St. Paul, MN with over 14,500 members throughout the United States and several countries around the world.

ECCT Presents: "Sideways Stories from Wayside School"

Date(s): 10/3/2014 Date(s): 10/4/2014 Date(s): 10/5/2014 Date(s): 10/10/2014 Date(s): 10/11/2014

.

Reserved seating tickets are $8 for youth/students and $12 for seniors/adults, and may be purchased online at www.ecct.org, by calling 715-839-8877, or at the door.

SIDEWAYS STORIES is sponsored by Family Times Newspaper as well as our 2014-2015 season sponsor, Kristo Orthodontics.

For tickets or more information, visit www.ecct.org or call 715-839-8877.
