September Artists of the Month: Chippewa Valley Watercolor Painters

Date(s): 9/5/2014

5-7 pm

Heyde Center for the Arts, 3 South High Street, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729
Exhibit runs from Tuesday, September 2 to Wednesday, September 24 weekdays; closed weekends. Artist Reception: Friday, September 5 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The Chippewa Valley Watercolor Artists are celebrating 20 years of painting and showing their work to the public.

This group started in 1994 as a result of Janet Carson’s "On Location Watercolor Class" with seven people and has since grown to over thirty members. The Watercolorists meet the first Wednesday of each month at Beaver Creek Reserve, Hwy K, north of Fall Creek. At our meetings we paint, critique, share information and learn from each other. As we create, we experience the joy as well as the frustration, and through it all we have a good time. All watercolor artists, beginning through advanced, are invited to join.

Fertile Ground: Where Possibility Meets Welcome

Date(s): 9/5/2014

5-7 pm

Heyde Center for the Arts, 3 South High Street, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729
FERTILE GROUND: WHERE POSSIBILITY MEETS WELCOME
Exhibit runs from Tuesday, September 2 to Wednesday, September 24
Artist Reception: Friday, September 5 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Every now and then the right elements come together to make something extraordinary happen. At the Episcopal Cathedral in Eau Claire, the seeds of artistry seem to have landed on good soil. Fertile Ground is an exhibition of artwork at the Heyde Center for the Arts in September 2014, composed of work from some of the award winning and influential artists currently connected to Christ Church Cathedral, photographer Hope Greene, sculptor Catelyn Mailloux and painter Constance Denchy.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The Question Lakes: photographic prints by Hope Greene
Hope Greene is an internationally exhibited artist living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where her studio is housed in a small dairy barn. An advocate for bringing art and artists into everyday life, she founded and directs the Artist in Residence program at Christ Church Cathedral and is a contributing writer for Volume One. Greene is currently one of the nine artists participating in the CSA program through the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center.

Sculpture by Catelyn Mailloux
Catelyn Mailloux, a native of Minnesota, is a recent graduate in art and education at UWEC. She is one of the two Artists in Residence at the Cathedral. Mailloux won first place at the 2012 Confluence of Art Biennial and her work has recently been featured at Janet Carson Gallery in Eau Claire. This past summer, she completed work on a collaborative sculpture for the new education building on the UWEC campus.

Splash and All: paintings on plastic wrap by Constance Denchy
Constance Denchy was born in West Hampton Beach, Long Island NY. She graduated with a BFA from the the University of the Arts in 1987 with a series of paintings called Infant Images that by 1996 became a fellowship award winning series, from the Delaware Division of the Arts, called Infant Equations. Since that time, she has exhibited in several states and in Japan. In 2008, Ms Denchy became a PCA AiE State Roster Artist, which allowed her to continue developing her Infant Equations Theory, while also creating proactive collaborative community projects in over 55 site venues since 2008. More recently, since March of 2010, Ms. Denchy made a solo debut of her Infant Equations using a technique she calls: “a clear wrap” using cling wrap as canvas.

Special Artist Reception Thursday, November 6 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Successful visual art captures the energy and light of an object or idea. Using color, space, contrast, light and different mediums, the Valley Art Association (VAA) members have captured Light in their visual art. You are invited to witness results of the many ways this was done in The Right Light art exhibit/sale. There will be a special reception held on Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., during the reception, a short VAA business meeting (15 minutes) will be held. This 15-minute meeting is open to the public. Then you will experience an exciting look into the creation of the pieces of art displayed as each artist will briefly shed light on their use of Light in their work. 11th Annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes

Date(s): 9/7/2014

Registration: 11:00 am, Start: Noon

Carson Park: 199 Carson Park Dr
This walk is to raise funds for critically needed type 1 diabetes research and shows support for the millions of people affected by this serious disease.
(Eau Claire, WI) The 11th Annual JDRF “Walk to Cure Diabetes” will be held Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Carson Park, Eau Claire. FREE registration begins at 11am and the walk begins at noon. The walk is open to the public and includes free food, entertainment, prizes and monitored blood glucose testing. WQOW TV-18 anchor Heidi Bohl will emcee the event.

Following the walk, Ironman triathlete Jay Hewitt, a type 1 diabetic, will give a motivational talk on training for triathlons while living with the challenge of diabetes. Hewitt’s appearance is sponsored by Novo Nordisk and is also free to the public.

Juvenile diabetes, or type 1, is a sudden, and devastating chronic disease that affects millions of people, most of them children or young adults. Type 1 diabetics rely on insulin to stay alive – meaning multiple injections daily, or having insulin delivered by a pump. In addition, type 1 diabetics need to test their blood sugars multiple times a day, eat a careful diet and exercise on a regular basis.

Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar, being overweight, or lack of exercise. Rather, it occurs when the body’s immune system destroys certain cells in the pancreas. The pancreas stops producing insulin and the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels. If blood sugar levels get too high for a prolonged period of time, diabetic coma can occur. In the case of blood sugars that are too low, diabetics can suffer seizures or even death.

Insulin is not a cure for the disease, it is life support. It is estimated that one out of every three Medicare dollars is spent on diabetes-related care and the devastating complications that arise from the disease; including kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation and an overall shortened life span of up to 15 years.

JDRF hopes to raise $100 million in donations this year to find a cure for diabetes. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.2B to diabetes research.

Since its local inception 11 years ago, the Eau Claire JDRF “Walk to Cure” diabetes has raised over $285,000 for type 1 diabetes research.

Conservation Observance Day

Date(s): 9/12/2014

8:15 am - 2:30 pm

Augusta, WI - just off of Highway 12 on the west edge of Augusta, watch for the sign and tent
Join Dudley “Joe” and Marian Smith as they host this year’s celebration of Conservation Observance Day in Augusta, Wisconsin. The event will kick off at 8:15 a.m. from the main tent site on the west edge of Augusta, just off of Highway 12. The day will include tours of their farm and a neighboring trout stream, lunch and presentations at the main tent site, followed by a tour of Bush Bros. Bean’s waste-water treatment facility. Conservation displays and exhibits will also be available throughout the day at the event tent. The Smith Family was recognized by the Wisconsin Land + Water Conservation Association as the state’s Conservation Farmer of the Year at its annual convention in March. The award reflects upon the Smith’s total farm conservation accomplishments, leadership, community involvement, and conservation education which has spanned the past 5 decades.

The morning tours will include on-farm presentations on no-till, cover crops, soil health, and the Smith’s conservation farm management. The tour continues with presentations at a nearby trout stream. Following the morning tours will be a lunch with presentations. Scheduled to appear is the 67th Alice in Dairyland, Zoey Brooks. Another tour is scheduled for the afternoon to view Bush Bros. Bean’s waste-water treatment facility.

The tours, lunch and presentations are free and open to the public. The tours will be held outside; rain or shine. The event is sponsored by Eau Claire County Land Conservation, Wisconsin Land + Water Conservation Association, and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection.
