World Book Night at Memorial

Date(s): 4/23/2014

3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Memorial High School Library 2225 Keith St. Eau Claire, WI 54720 (please enter through Door 4 on Keith Street)
What is World Book Night?

World Book Night is a campaign to spread the love of reading, person to person. On April 23, (Shakespeare’s Birthday) individual and group volunteers across the United States give away thousands of wonderful free books to light or non-readers. Memorial’s Teen Literacy initiative is one of the groups authorized to receive and give away these books.

Where do the free books come from?

Each year, publishers and authors donate specially printed paperbacks from a list of terrific reads by a wide array of award-winning and bestselling adult and young adult authors. This year, some of my all-time favorite books are on the list!

How can people get these books? And who are the books intended for?

On Wednesday, April 23, people are invited to the Memorial high school library, from 3:00 – 6:00.

World Book Night is a program that encourages more people to read, so we especially encourage people who aren’t already avid readers, who haven’t yet discovered the joy of reading, or who don’t have easy access to books, to come to the Memorial library on April 23 and pick up a free book.

Why is World Book Night important?

Reading is so important. Not only does it improve literacy, but reading changes lives! It opens a window to the world and takes us outside our own lives, helps us build understanding and empathy for others, and it’s fun! Studies show that reading can improve social interaction, mental health and increase happiness. So come to the Memorial library on Wednesday of next week for a free dose of happiness!

Car Seat Recycle Day

9 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Eau Claire Ford Lincoln and Quick Lane (2909 Lorch Avenue, Eau Claire)
Safe Kids Chippewa Valley (a program of Sacred Heart Hospital), Eau Claire Ford Lincoln and Quick Lane, Advanced Disposal and Safe Kids Wisconsin are partnering in a statewide “Car Seat Recycle Day” to offer Chippewa Valley parents, grandparents and caretakers a safe, environmentally-friendly alternative to disposing old, broken or outgrown car seats – free of charge.

On Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Eau Claire Ford Lincoln and Quick Lane (2909 Lorch Avenue, Eau Claire), community members can drop off car seats that are older than six years old, or purchased at a garage sale/thrift store, or involved in a crash. The car seats will then be dismantled, recycled and disposed of properly. The free service is on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointments will be taken.

“People may not know that all car seats have an expiration date that can be found on the manufacturer’s label,” said Paula Pater, Safe Kids Chippewa Valley coordinator. “If there isn’t an exact expiration date listed on a car seat, a general rule is that it expires six years from the manufacture date. Seats used after their expiration date may not be safe or hold up in a crash.”

According to Safe Kids USA, car seats purchased second hand are dangerous as well. The history of the car seat is unknown and may have been involved in a crash or recalled.
The free service is on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointments will be taken
