11th Annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes

Date(s): 9/7/2014

Registration: 11:00 am, Start: Noon

Carson Park: 199 Carson Park Dr
This walk is to raise funds for critically needed type 1 diabetes research and shows support for the millions of people affected by this serious disease.
(Eau Claire, WI) The 11th Annual JDRF “Walk to Cure Diabetes” will be held Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Carson Park, Eau Claire. FREE registration begins at 11am and the walk begins at noon. The walk is open to the public and includes free food, entertainment, prizes and monitored blood glucose testing. WQOW TV-18 anchor Heidi Bohl will emcee the event.

Following the walk, Ironman triathlete Jay Hewitt, a type 1 diabetic, will give a motivational talk on training for triathlons while living with the challenge of diabetes. Hewitt’s appearance is sponsored by Novo Nordisk and is also free to the public.

Juvenile diabetes, or type 1, is a sudden, and devastating chronic disease that affects millions of people, most of them children or young adults. Type 1 diabetics rely on insulin to stay alive – meaning multiple injections daily, or having insulin delivered by a pump. In addition, type 1 diabetics need to test their blood sugars multiple times a day, eat a careful diet and exercise on a regular basis.

Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar, being overweight, or lack of exercise. Rather, it occurs when the body’s immune system destroys certain cells in the pancreas. The pancreas stops producing insulin and the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels. If blood sugar levels get too high for a prolonged period of time, diabetic coma can occur. In the case of blood sugars that are too low, diabetics can suffer seizures or even death.

Insulin is not a cure for the disease, it is life support. It is estimated that one out of every three Medicare dollars is spent on diabetes-related care and the devastating complications that arise from the disease; including kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, amputation and an overall shortened life span of up to 15 years.

JDRF hopes to raise $100 million in donations this year to find a cure for diabetes. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.2B to diabetes research.

Since its local inception 11 years ago, the Eau Claire JDRF “Walk to Cure” diabetes has raised over $285,000 for type 1 diabetes research.
