Wisconsin DNR Bat Program and Bat House Building Workshop

Wisconsin has seven species of bat, four of which are threatened and three are listed as Species of Greatest Conservation Need. With the newly introduced White-nose Syndrome in the state, there is no better time to assist in this citizen science opportunity. Join us and DNR bat expert Heather Kaarakka as we learn all about these misunderstood night flyers, and briefly learn about bat monitoring techniques you can get involved with. Following the educational program, there will be a bat house building workshop to construct a bat house for your own backyard. You will receive training on how to monitor your new bat house and how to report your data to the WNDR. Price includes bat house materials.
Registration and full payment required by March 25.

Freebee the Grebe Children's Book Storytelling & Art Workshop

Cloudia CloudMaker will be arriving in her Cloud Chariot to tell the children's story, written by Karen Wise, about Freebee the Grebe. In this book, Freebee sets off on an adventure to find out how storms are made and meets some unusual characters along the way. Following the story telling, participants will be able to make their own painting on Yupo Paper.

Acoustic Bat Monitor Volunteer Training and Bat House Building Workshop

Join us and DNR bat biologists to learn about Wisconsin’s bat species and how to conduct acoustic monitoring and bat roost monitoring surveys in the Chippewa Valley. The program will begin with a bat house building workshop where you will build a bat house for your own backyard, receive training on how to monitor your new bat house and how to report your data to the WNDR. Following the workshop we will step into the night and learn how to use the Citizen Science Center’s portable acoustic bat monitoring device to assist state bat biologists with collecting data about these misunderstood night flyers. Price includes bat house materials.

Management Workshop Series

Free experiential workshops for the business community and UWEC students and faculty on topics around generational diversity - the March workshop covers the different perspectives generations have about “good” leadership and how to lead in a way that speaks to all generations effectively. The second workshop (which is being hosted by the student organization SHRM) will be a panel discussion about generational differences related to communication and how that impact work outcomes and interactions.

The event is being sponsored by PESI and their CEO Mike Conner is assisting me on the workshops.

Make Your Own Snowshoes

Snowshoeing has become a popular winter activity. Make your own snowshoes in this two-day workshop. Choose from three styles of snowshoes: Green Mountain bear paw (10” x 36”), Alaskan trail shoe (10” x 56”) or the great, all-purpose Ojibwa style (11” x 54”). All shoes are laced with tubular nylon, which is comfortable to work with, and have great strength when varnished. Bring to class: PATIENCE, bag lunch, tape measure, pencil, scissors and matches or lighter.
