Their business is called "A Yarn Good Idea."
It started four years ago when Pam Eberhardt decided to start knitting again and couldn't find a pair of knitting needles she liked. She asked her husband Bob, an avid carpenter, to make her a pair. Then on a trip to California, Pam and a friend went to a knitting shop in search of wooden knitting needles. After having no luck, Pam and Bob sat on the beach and decided when they got back to Eau Claire, the would start their own business.
Bob uses birch dowels and carves them down to the appropriate size, then carves out the top and sands them down. Pam glues them together and varnishes and waxes them, before packaging and shipping them.
They started with only three sizes, but have expanded to 19. Customers are from across the U.S. and even in Europe.
The two say they enjoy their time together in the workshop and plan to keep at it as long as it's fun.
The Eberhardt's don't sell the needles out of their home But you can pick up a pair of "Yarn Good" knitting needles at Yellow Dog Knitting in Eau Claire. They start at $12 a pair.
