Tucked away in a Wisconsin forest on the shores of a private lake is the home of one the most famous gangsters of all time.
Today we're wandering north to give you an inside look into the world of Al Capone at his Northwoods hideout.
Al Capone was probably one o the highest profile gangsters or mobsters of all time. Capone was quoted as saying "the Federal Government put me in business." In 1925, he was 26 years old. In 1931 when he was taken off the streets for income tax evasion, he was 31.
This was a fair weather retreat for Capone. One time he spent 30 days here, which was a longtime for him to be anywhere.
In the middle/late 20's, he bought and built the property here. It's hard to say how he chose it, but this area was popular with mobsters. Northern Wisconsin cooked up a lot of alcohol. He was looking for a remote site within a two day drive of Chicago.
The main lookout tower is up on the hill. You could see to the main gate, a half mile away.
Our bar, restaurant and gift shop is built in the original eight car garage. When Capone was here, there were guards on the garage roof, in the tower and around the perimeter. This is a hundred acre property and the house is in the middle, on the highest hill.
Capone is a known sportsman. There was a pier that went into the middle of the lake and he would fish. He would also hit golf balls off the top of this hill.
When you go in the main lodge, people are fascinated. When you look at the outside, you have no conception of what you'll see inside. It's a stunner. The structure is the way it stood when Capone was here. We have some of the original furniture: the mohair couch and and chair, the rolltop desk and the bookshelves.
The spiral staircases are unique, and the hand-cut native stone fireplace is one of the finest we've seen. Of course, the balconies are unique.
We are not apologists for Al Capone. The man was a genius in his organizational skills. If he would have channeled it elsewhere, who knows what we'd be doing today? We focus on the uniqueness of the property and putting it back in the era.
They lit up the yard like Chicago. They had their own generator plant on the property.
It's just fascinating. The mystique of Al who to this day stands as some sort of legend. However, you want to look at it. It was a fascinating era and he was a fascinating figure in that era.
Capone's Hideout is open daily all summer for tours. Besides the hideout, you'll also see a museum about Al Capone and the Roaring 20's.
