All week long we're spotlighting the city of Augusta and in this Wandering Wisconsin, we take you to an old fashioned drive-in restaurant.
Summertime means Tep's Drive-In time in town. It's been a warm-weather tradition in Augusta since 1958.
(Sounds from the drive-in)
Carhop: Alright, what can I get for you
When you're a carhop, a day at the office really keeps you hoppin'.
Carhop: Can I get two root beer floats? Sure! Order in!
When they put it in park, she puts it in gear.
Carhop: I'll be right back with that for ya. This goes to 8?
Are you two all set to order?
Chelsea Anderson has been a carhop here for six years.
Carhop: Would you like beans or coleslaw with that?
She serves up a side of sunshine with every order.
Carhop: There you go, how's your ice cream?
Chelsea says, "we're here to make sure the customers have fun, so have fun with us."
And the moment you pull in, you're part of the family.
Carhop: Hi there.... menus for you tonight?
Chelsea says, "almost all the customers we know, and if you don't know they they're tourists who think this place is so cool."
From the cool sweets to the tasty eats, co-owner Jason TePaske says they have something for everyone, "still have the burgers, brew our own root beer, but have a lot of updated food, an old fashioned root beer stand, not so old fashioned food."
Customer: It's delicious!
They cook up things like tuna steak, loaded up fries and loads of memories here.
TePaske: We see a lot of local faces.
Customer: I've been coming here since I was little.
Customer: Come here with my parents a lot.
Chelsea says, "once it warms up, minivans full of families. Kids love this place."
And TePaske says he and his wife love owning a piece of Americana.
"People like coming here, they like the interaction and they like eating in their car," he says.
Chelsea adds, "I keep coming back because I love it."
Carhop: Thank you ladies, have a good night.
Tep's Old Fashioned Drive- in is open open 7 days a week rain or shine this summer. You can find them right on highway 12 at the edge of town.
