Deep freeze in Midwest puts normal routines on ice

CHICAGO (AP) -- The frigid temperatures gripping the central U.S. for the second time in weeks are upending people's routines and travel plans.

With the bitter weather settling in Monday across the Midwest, parents are bringing kids to work or just staying home because schools were closed, again. Companies that offer delivery services are being flooded with calls from customers eager to pay someone else to brave the severe weather. And cabdrivers say it's so chilly that people are hailing them for trips only a block away -- or even half a block.

Temperatures across the region were falling below zero Monday with wind chills in some areas forecast to dive below minus 40 degrees. And there's no quick relief in sight as subzero highs were expected to dominate into Tuesday.
