Local survivor remembers Hurricane Katrina

(WEAU) - "Sunday morning my dad wakes me at 6 ‘o clock in the morning and says pack your bags we got to go," said Troy Nelson, who survived Hurricane Katrina.

The Hurricane Katrina disaster is one that Troy Nelson and his family are all too familiar with, after living in Mississippi.

"Everything has been obliterated," said Nelson in September 2005, while videotaping his home.

Troy says he was only 14 years old at the time when he left behind his home. All he took was his clothes and his camera.

"This is part of our dining room set about a block away," said Nelson.

After his family packed their bags, they went to a shelter about 40 miles from his house. He remembers it like it was yesterday.

“It was pretty scary. Power was out. It was dark, was windy, cars were getting flipped over, trees were getting torn down everwhere," said Nelson.

After a week, family members saw his house on TV, but nothing was left.

"This is our yard," said Nelson

His family then chose to come back to Wisconsin to restart their lives.

Although it’s been about 7 years since Troy and his family lost everything in Hurricane Katrina; he says UW Stout is his home.

“When it first happens it’s frightening you don't know what to think, but at this point in my life, it’s just stuff it can all be replaced," said Nelson.

But one thing that can't be replaced is the memories he has of sailboats and fishing.

"Fate brought me up here," said Nelson.
