La Crosse (WEAU)- Forecasters are tracking a snow storm coming from the Dakotas. Southern Wisconsin could have snow accumulations of 6 inches or more.

The snow is predicted to fall at a heavy rate of one inch an hour and forecasters say this snow will be wet and slushy.

The snow storm will be hitting a wide area.

“Look for a band of snowfall to occur. It will spread from the Dakotas down to Iowa, into southern Minnesota, into southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois," said Meteorologist Andrew Just.

We are due for a snow storm, though meteorologists say this warm winter may last until summer.

“What I've seen seems to suggest that the warmer than average temps we’ve been had these last couple months, is to persist into March, May, and April as well," said Just.

The city of La Crosse is prepared to clear the streets no matter how much snow falls.

“The crews ready to go, and the equipment is ready to go. We’re watching the weather, and were waiting in anticipation. We’ll see what happens," said Dale Hexom, Director of Public Works in La Crosse.

The snow is predicted to be wet and heavy, but where exactly the snow will fall and exactly how much is hard to tell.

“The forecast is iffy at best. They’re saying anywhere from 4 -8 inches, and it could be heavy wet snow. It’s still winter," said Hexom.

Hardware stores have been hoping for this storm to help clear the shelves.

“I have snow blowers that will handle any kind of snow out there. Wet, light and fluffy, it’d all blow out of the way," said Lloyd Turner, Manager of Ace Hardware.
