Weather radios can keep you safe during severe weather.

"It provides you, your family or your business with valuable information regarding storms. Similar to a smoke detector only for weather."

Tom Hurley with Eau Claire County Emergency Management says that having a weather radio will alert you and could safe your life. Even at night.

"The volume is set so that it can wake you up and alert you to severe weather. The volume is loud, it is alerting. And that is by design."

Over at Lake Shore Elementary School a weather radio is in the office area, and on stand-by to alert the students and faculty of inclement weather is in the area.

"If there's tornado warnings and getting closer we can take our positions, we practice that here so the kids know what to do and where to go in case of bad weather."

"So a weather radio like this one can be a life saver. But what if you're not at school or at home and on the go? Well, they've got an app for that."

"The Commercial Mobile Alert System allows cell phone recipients of newer cell phones to be made aware of severe weather in their area."

Hurley says this is a great tool if you are traveling, the phone will alert you if there are warnings based on your proximity to the cell phone towers nearest to you.

"So if a resident from the Twin Cities were traveling through Eau Claire and there was a tornado watch or warning there cell phone or their smart phone would alert them that they are driving into that area"

Hurley says most smart phones that have been manufactured in the last 18 months or less should have the emergency alert app installed already. If not you can find it in the app store, or ask your cell phone provider for assistance.

With both of these alert systems the main goal is to keep yourself and others safe anytime severe weather strikes. In Eau Claire, Drew Williams, WEAU 13 news.
