A portion of Western Wisconsin gets soaking rain this weekend

Not everybody saw the soaker we were hoping for this weekend, but one chunk of the viewing area sure did. You folks in the Coulee Region picked up a good amount of precipitation over the past two days. Several locations in that region picked up well over 1” of rainfall.

The rain got going late Friday night with more showers during the day on Saturday. The brunt of the rainfall however came on Sunday as the low passed through Illinois and headed into Michigan. Here’s a look at the radar out of La Crosse at 10AM on Sunday morning. Notice the quick cut off in precipitation. Communities west of Eau Claire saw absolutely nothing. On the flip side, places like Sparta, La Crosse, Marshfield, Medford, and other towns saw a consistent, steady rain all morning. The rain gradually ended in the afternoon.

The Coulee Region rainfall totals were consistently over one inch with some locations pick up over two inches. In the Chippewa Valley, the rainfall totals were a bit more all over the place. For instance, at the Eau Claire airport we received .24” in all but here at the station on the southeast side of town we got nearly half an inch. Consistently lesser amounts the farther north you went. Below is a sampling of rainfall totals over the past 48 hours.

Ladysmith: .15”
Eau Claire: .24”
New Richmond: .36”

Some places around La Crosse did hear some thunder on Saturday, but as you can see below the severe weather was well down to the south in the Great Plains. There were five tornadoes reported along with dozens of wind reports. Below are the storm reports from the Storm Prediction Center.
