A recap of the Christmas Storm of 2012

The big storm that brought a white Christmas to parts of Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas while bringing tornadoes to portions of the deep south has finally moved out of the country. The storm brought the worst of what winter and spring weather can offer.

This storm created a line of winter storm and blizzard warnings stretching from northern Texas and practically all of Oklahoma all the way up to Maine! The storm dumped six inches of snow in a total of 19 states. Below is a link to snowfall and rainfall totals from this Christmas storm system. It's impact to travel was crippling. Horrible timing what with the holidays. As a result of the storm, as of December 29th, 64% of the country is covered with some amount of snow. Not sure if you could say that at any time last year.

Of the several tornadoes that touched down, at least 2 were rated EF-3. One in southeast Texas and the other hit in Mississippi. Tornadoes this time of year are quite rare, even rarer, tornadoes this strong. Only 4 other tornadoes have struck the United States on Christmas Day.

Below is a look at the storm reports from Christmas Day.

The scariest situation that evening was the tornado that took a direct hit on Mobile, AL. A tornado emergency was issued, and the big wedge twister could be seen a new station's skycam. Twitter was blowing up from the storm. It was scary stuff. Fortunately, nobody was killed from any of the tornadoes including this Mobile twister. Below was the path it took through the city. The fact it was Christmas probably saved live in this situation since less people were out and about.

Check out this incredible video from the Walgreens in Mobile, AL. Crazy!!
