A wild and whacky transition from summer to fall this weekend

On Saturday morning the autumnal equinox began at 9:49 A.M. The transition from summer to fall was an eventful one in Western Wisconsin. A vigorous area of low pressure dropped out of Canada and was able to change some rain showers to snow shower for northern portions of Wisconsin on Friday night. The system had enough cold air with it to produce a dusting snow from northern Minnesota through the Hayward Lakes area then along Highway 8 and surrounding areas. Below is a picture of a coating of snow on Saturday morning in the small town of Hawkins, WI. It’s just east of Ladysmith.

A cold area of high pressure dropped south behind the system clearing skies on Sunday night. Much of the Midwest including all of Western Wisconsin was under a freeze warning. There was enough of a breeze for the majority of the night to keep most places only a few degrees on either side of the freezing mark. However, there were several locations that dipped well down into the 20s. Below is a list of low temperatures from Sunday morning. La Crosse tied the record of 31 degrees that was previously set in 1974.
