April is finally turning around for the better

After weeks upon weeks of dealing with unseasonably cold weather along with a lot of rain and snow, we are finally getting some nice, spring-like weather. This should be a beautiful weekend to get outside as temperatures climb into the 60s and 70s.

This weekend will be a stark difference from the previous many days of April. Temperatures will actually be at or above normal for a change. As of April 25th, we have spent 48 consecutive days with below average high temperatures in Eau Claire. Thus far in April, the average temperature is over 10 degrees below normal. Even with a warm up expected for the rest of the month, this will still probably go down as one of the coolest Aprils on record.

Yesterday, in Eau Claire, we finally reached 50 degrees for the first time this year. Since 1949, this is our latest first 50 degree high temperature.

This warm up in the coming days comes at a good time. Tomorrow, April 26th, is the latest first 60 degree high temperature for the city of La Crosse. That record dates back to 1951. La Crosse has yet to reach 60 degrees, but it looks like that will finally happen for Friday. Looks like 2013 will join 1951 for that dubious distinction.

In the Twin Cities, April has been so cold they actually reached a record low temperature. There hasn’t been a record low temperature in the Twin Cities since 2004. The Twin Cities dipped down to 21 degrees back on April 20th. That smashed the old record set WAY back in 1888 of 26 degrees.
So along with the cold, came plenty of snow this month. Eau Claire has received 8.8” of snow as of April 25th. That’s a solid 7” above normal for the month and has taken our winter long snow total up to a whopping 75” of snow. Here’s a look at how that ranks up for top winter snowfalls.

#1) 89.3” (1996/97)
#2) 78.2” (1968/69)
#3) 77.6” (1995/96)
#4) 75.8” (1970/71)
#5) 75.0” (2012/13)
#6) 71.5” (2010/11)

Even though we’ve had a lot of snow, we’ve also had a lot of rain as well this month. As unpleasant as that’s been, all this precipitation has been great news for the drought situation in the state. More on that in a later blog post.

So there you have it. It’s been a tough month, but it’s going to end on a beautiful note. Enjoy the warm weather this weekend! We’ve earned it!
