Decent viewing of once in a lifetime Venus Transit expected

It's a once in a lifetime event known as the Venus Transit. It's when Venus passes directly in between the Sun and Earth. If you missed it back on June 8, 2004, then this will be it! There are usually two transits within several years and then a very large gap until the next too. After today's transit, the next two wont occur again until December 2117 and December 2125. That's a big 105 year gap until the next one!

So it's kind of a big deal. This is kind of like the solar eclipse we saw a few weeks ago except this time Venus will only be covering up a very small part of the Sun. You'll see a very small black disk moving across the face of the Sun. That disk is Venus.

REMEMBER...don't look directly at the sun!! It will cause permanent eye damage. You need the right eye protection to view the Venus Transit. You can find more information on that online, but in Eau Claire you can head out to Epiphany Lutheran Church at 3031 Epiphany Lane. Solar telescopes will be available to see the dot of Venus against the disk of the sun. They will be out there between 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

In Western Wisconsin, the transit will last from about 5:10pm to sunset around 8:30pm. The good news is weather should be decent for most of us to see a portion of the transit. We do have some scattered clouds throughout the area. The clouds cover more area up to the north where we have a few scattered showers. Hopefully sometime before sunset you'll be able to check out this cool event!

Good news if there's pesky clouds you can view the transit on several live streams. There's a link below.
