Late Season: Time To Bag A Buck

Late season bowhunting is not a sport for the weak; the weather plays a huge role either in a good way or bad way. Late season hunting can be the perfect opportunity for you if you’re able to use the weather to your advantage. Since my bow tag is already filled I will miss out on hunting over Christmas break, but there is still time left to fill your tag. Use these tips and tricks to harvest a mature buck during the late season.
#1. Always check the weather. Everything from snow storms to extreme cold are possible in Dec/early Jan. Expect the unexpected.
#2. Loosen Your Bow Poundage. Cold weather can make a 65lb pull feel more like 105lbs. Also practice shooting your bow in your winter weather gear.
#3. Understand Winter Deer Habits. Especially in snowy climates, whitetail deer tend to minimize their movements in order to maximize their energy efficiency. Hunting a food source is always a good idea.
#4. Hunt Before & After Storms. Deer tend to move while the pressure is dropping(before the storm), and rising pressure(after the storm). When the snow is coming down and the wind is blowing, it’s hard for deer to keep track of everything going on around them. I love hunting in the snow!!
#5. Dress in Layers Staying Warm is definitely important if you want to late season bowhunt. If it gets really cold it works good to ducktape handwarmers on your shirt close to your kidneys and behind your neck. I have already hunting in temps close to -20 and handwarmers are a must!.
Always make sure you are safe while bowhunting. If you climb up a stand always wear a safety belt. Be careful not to slip on snow or ice when climbing up to your treestand.
