Latest winter storm just another reminder this is not the March of 2012

You know the one thing about Wisconsin weather is that it is very rarely boring. It’s been a snowy start to the month of March with two winter storm separated by only a week’s time. A lot of people are getting snow fatigued. This most recent storm’s timing is pretty interesting when you compare it to last March at this time. I got an email from viewing saying a year ago today on March 11th, he was sitting on the deck with his wife enjoying a couple refreshing beverages and basking in the 66° weather. They won’t be doing that today! Below is a look at snowfall totals from this most recent winter storm from the National Weather Service out of La Crosse.

This March and the March of 2012 couldn’t be more different. Today we have several inches of snow on the ground but last year on the 11th, it was the first day totally void of any snowpack. Much of the country had absolutely no snow and that would lead to a big surge in temperatures in the coming days. A year ago today was the beginning of what would be an epic March heat wave making for the warmest March in recorded history for Eau Claire and much of the country.

Here’s a look at what temperatures did in the coming days in Eau Claire…

3/10 64°
3/11 66°
3/12 54°
3/13 64°
3/14 76°
3/15 69°
3/16 80°
3/17 82°
3/18 80°
3/19 76°
3/20 69°

Pretty crazy right? Below is a snow depth map for the U.S. You can see a deep snow pack exits from Wisconsin through Minnesota and into the Dakotas. There’s also a sizable snowpack to our south in Iowa into Nebraska and Kansas. This means don’t expect a March like what we saw last year. It won’t be warm that warm and this snowpack is sticking around.
