The east coast has only seen two Nor'easters this season, which pales in comparison to the 2010-2011 winter season. There was the one big storm pictured below that rode up the east coast Sunday into Monday. The last Nor'easter was way back in October of 2011, but more on that later.
This nor'easter brought with it heavy rain, heavy snow, and a whole lot of wind. La Guardia Airport in NYC recorded a wind gust of 58 mph on Sunday night. The wind machine is continuing to batter the region on into Monday.
What's really incredible about this storm is how it's dumped as much as 6-12" of snow over a big swath of Pennsylvania into upstate New York. Higher elevations have seen well over a foot of the heavy, wet snow. At times snowfall rates were over 1" per hour. Over 75,000 people were without power last night due to the storm. These are the same areas that just a month ago were part of the historic March heatwave where highs were well into the 80s. Now many signs of spring like flowers and green grass are covered with a coating of snow.
The good news about this storm system was that it did dump a lot of rain to places that needed it. Below is the drought status before these recent rains. You can see many areas mainly along the coast are under moderate to severe drought. A whopping 2-4" fell in the region. Central Park in NYC smashed its old record for rainfall on Sunday. 2.45" of rain fell on the city beating the old record in 1969 of 1.8".
It's incredible that they only two nor'easters would land very early and late in the season. The last nor'easter fell on Halloween weekend. That messed up a lot of people's plans. At least 20 cities reported record snowfall amounts. Peru, MA tallied the most with 32" falling. A staggering 39 people were killed by the big storm, and transportation came to a halt. So it goes without saying the April Nor'easter was far tamer than the October Nor'easter. 75,000 people lost powerful from the April storm. In October, it was over 1.7 million people. It's rare to see nothing has far as Nor'easters go from November through March.
