Overview of the September 4th severe weather outbreak

We haven’t seen much severe weather this year, but when we have it has been quite impressive. The severe weather event of September 4th was no different. There were two rounds of storms that moved through portions of the viewing area. The first round came through in the afternoon dumping large hail through much of the Chippewa Valley and down into the La Crosse area. You can see the radar loop above. The photo below is from Chetek where you can see golf ball-sized hail fell. Diameters were as much as 2”.

Following this afternoon round, an evening and overnight round came through Western Wisconsin. The heaviest storms were down in the Coulee Region.

This round would produce the state’s 4th tornado of the year, which you can see above. It touched down at 7:38pm in northwest Grant County. Much of the damage was near Bloomington with one example of a damaged home about 2 miles outside town. The tornado was short lived, lasting only 6 minutes, but it was the strongest tornado in Wisconsin this year. The Grant County tornado was rated an EF-2.

The last September tornado in Wisconsin was back in 2007 in Racine County. All and all this has been a very quiet tornado season. I talked about this in a lot of detail in a previous blog post. Right now we are tied with 1953 for the second least amount of tornadoes in a calendar year.

This second round of storms also brought with it strong winds and more hail. Of course there was heavy rain too. Some areas picked up 3-4”. Below are the storm reports and warnings that were issued from 4pm to midnight on September 4th.
