Say goodbye to our snowpack this week

Around 60% of the country has some level of snow cover as of January 6th. However, as we move into the first full week of the new year and of the month that looks to change. We have a very mild week of weather on the way. Highs across much of the state look to be above freezing from Monday through at least Friday.

Here are some off the local snowfall totals from around our area.

4" Eau Claire
3" Minneapolis
4" Rochester
5" La Crosse
5" Duluth
8" Green Bay
9" Madison
1" Milwaukee

Here's a look at the warmer air mass that will be moving into Western Wisconsin. These maps show the warm vs cold air masses. The blue colors are colder while the greens are warmer. Notice the surge in greens as we go late into the week by Thursday.

By Thursday we watch a storm system that will work up from the south. On the maps, above to see snow you want to have an airmass in the blues. However, there's none to be found close to Western Wisconsin on Thursday. That means when the precipitations moves in later on Thursday then on into Friday it will all fall likely as rain. This will only further deplete our snowpack.

If you are a lover of snow, there is one bright spot. There is another storm system for the weekend. That one has the potential to bring measurable snow to the area. You'll definitely want to stay tuned to our forecasts throughout the week as these two systems evolve.
