This is definitely a sight you don’t see every day. The city of Cairo in Egypt was coated in a fresh blanket of snow for the first time in over 100 years. This historic storm also brought snow and cold temperatures to Israel and Syria as well in the region. Jerusalem has picked up over a foot of snow and has crippled commuters and power in the area. Another big snowstorm tonight into tomorrow looks to compound the problem and make for the greatest snowstorm on record for Jerusalem. Snows of more than 6” occur in the city about every 5 to 7 years.
Snow of any kind is far rarer for Egypt. Due to Egypt’s climate that is typically above freezing in the winter and lack of precipitation all year round, snow like this is a very unusual occurrence for the county.
If you check out twitter you can see a ton more photos that people have been tweeting of the Middle East snowstorm.
