Snowfall this year putting last winter to shame

Sure, it was pretty cold, but this weekend was at least quiet. I haven’t said that in forever. We’ve had a very active stretch of weather here in February. I did some digging into the numbers and the comparisons to last winter are night and day. It’s definitely been a far more normal winter this year.

As of February 16th, Eau Claire has picked up 35.9” of snow this winter. That’s 2.5” above normal. Wait ‘til you hear how much we had at this point last year….only 16.7” of snow! On average over an entire winter in Eau Claire, we should pick up 47” of snow. Last winter…for the whole winter…we only picked up 23.8” of snow. That’s the 13th least snowy winter season on record for the city. On February 3rd of this year we picked up just under half of an inch of snow and we easily surpassed last year’s snow total for the whole season.

Like I mentioned early it’s been a pretty busy month and a half. Not since early January have we seen two days in a row that were totally void of any precipitation. We’ve managed to have two completely dry days this weekend.

Just to show how active it’s been in Western Wisconsin, take La Crosse. Valentine’s Day wrapped up the third longest stretch of consecutive days with precipitation falling. You can see how much feel each day and how that’s added up. Climatologically, La Crosse usually sees .66” during this 19 day stretch. Meanwhile, for the 19 day stretch this year the city recorded 1.73”. That’s a lot for late January into February. The record for La Crosse for consecutive precipitation days is 21 days set back in 1962.

Enjoy the lull because things will once again get active for President’s Day with a chance for a wintry mix. Then, we’re keeping our eyes on a much larger system late in the week. That one could dump some significant snow here in Western Wisconsin. It’s something to watch closely in the coming days.
