Soggy Start to May

Rain and thunderstorms dominated the start of May and now much of the Chippewa Valley is trying to dry out. Below you see a map of radar estimated rain totals from April 30th to May 7th.

Most places were between 2" and 5" of rain, with some of the higher amounts near the St. Criox and Mississippi River Valleys. Notice the very high amounts, near 5" to 8" north of Madison in Central Wisconsin.
In Eau Claire, we got 2.51" of rain from May 1st to May 6th.
Here's the breakdown of rain at the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport for those days.
1) .03"
2) .42"
3) .59"
4) .05"
5) .71"
6) .71"
The normal amount of rain for those days is .65", so the 2.51" we got was 1.86" above normal.
It was really the 3 day period of Friday May 4th, Saturday(5th) and Sunday(6th) that brought the most rain. We had a weather pattern that developed storms farther to the west, near Sioux Falls South Dakota, and then saw those storms move in Wisconsin, dumping heavy rain as they pushed through. Below is the map of rainfall totals from Friday through Sunday morning.

Before the start of May, we were in danger of entering a drought. Most places in Wisconsin, especially the northern and western parts of the state, were below average for rain. It was the warm and dry March that lead to those conditions. But now we're the opposite, hoping to dry things out. Good news on that front though, a very dry weather pattern will persist into the middle part of May.
