Strongest Solar Storm Since 2005

A powerful solar eruption is expected to blast a stream of charged particles toward Earth today (Jan. 24), as the strongest radiation storm since 2005 rages on the sun. A solar Coronal Mass Ejection is travelling towards us at 1,400 miles per second. It will hit Earth around 9am Eastern Time on the 24th, which, may cause fluctuations on the power grid and disruptions to the Global Positioning System. Therefore the Northern Lights maybe visible in Wisconsin on Jan. 24th and 25th.

Radiation storms are a concern for astronauts, for communications at high latitudes, for satellites in space and for many rockets being launched.

According to NOAA, The radiation storm that began early this morning(Jan24th) and will continue to rise very slowly throughout the day but has remained at the S3 (Strong) level.
