April Fool’s Day is coming up on Monday. It’s a day known for a lot of practical jokes, and Mother Nature is known to have a sense of humor. Especially, recently, Mother Nature has brought some interesting weather to the Chippewa Valley on April 1st.
First, here are the normal values for April 1st in Eau Claire. Our average high is 50°…something we still haven’t reached in Eau Claire. La Crosse hit their first 50 degree day just today. The average low temperature is 28°.
As you can imagine, last year April 1st was well above normal. Our highs reached the upper 60s under party cloudy skies. It was a beautiful day indeed. That year we lucked out weather-wise. In 2011 we weren’t as lucky. Mother Nature played a big trick on us. A decent warm up through the 40s to end the month of March came to screeching halt on April 1st when the high was only 39° and Eau Claire picked up .7” of snow. The real funny thing was the following day the high soared up to nearly 50.
April 1st in Eau Claire
2012 67° DRY
2011 39° .7” of snow
2010 84° DRY
2009 37° .6” of snow
2008 39° .3” of snow
In the past 5 years, the majority of April Fool’s Days have been below normal. Actually, going back to 1999, the first day of April tends to below normal as far as high temperatures go. In 2009 and 2008 highs were stuck in the upper 30s with snow falling on both days. The biggest April Fool’s Day surprise came the following year in 2010 when we reached a record high of 84°. That was a warm one! Since 1999, the closest we’ve come to that kind of warmth was 68° in 1999.
So what’s going to happen this year? Well looks like we’ll see the coldest April 1st since 2002. Highs will be in the low 30s and a few flurries will be possible. Ah…Mother Nature…the laughs just keep coming.
