EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - Nothing can ruin your day faster than a flat tire.

“Anything that is smaller than a 1/4” hole is repairable in the tire as long as it is in the center of the tread, after tax is $28.49,” says Brent Baltuff of Youngstedt’s in Eau Claire. “If it is bigger than 1/4” then it is best to replace the tire, costwise it is so vehicle specific but anywhere between anywhere from $75 a tire to $200 a tire.”

The Eau Claire Police Department is investigating after they received multiple reports of “homemade spike strips” that had been placed on the road intentionally.

“They were all about 2 x 4s, similar types of boards with about 20 to 25 wood screws screwed into them,” says Josh Miller with the Eau Claire Police Department.

Miller says the police department got two separate calls from people who found the spike strips on the road on Thursday and Friday night.

“One was at the intersection of Menomonie and Ferry street and the other one was near the intersection of Menomonie and North Clairemont,” he says.

Then on Saturday another one was picked up at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Hudson Street.

Miller says luckily no one was hurt, but these "spike strips" are a major safety concern.

“The problem is if it’s at high speeds and somebody loses control based on the flattening of their tires it can cause a serious safety threat to anyone involved,” he says.

And there can be major consequences if someone is caught putting obstructions in the roadway.

“Just the act of putting it here would be some kind of attempt at criminal damage,” Miller says. “If somebody runs over these spike strips and loses control and injures somebody in the process, that is starting to lead into the felony type charges.”

Miller says if you see any of these “spike strips” in the road, avoid it the best you can and then call the Eau Claire Police Department.
