La Crosse County announced 15 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, for a total of 536 with 348 deemed recovered.

Three cases are hospitalized and the county still has zero deaths.

The health department is unaware if it has the authority to make a countywide mandatory face covering health order.

Instead, it’s meeting with local municipalities--as the department says face coverings are the “most easy tool the community is not maximizing.”

Additionally, the health department continues to meet weekly with every school in the county and says it’s proud of the changes being made to prepare for the fall.

“I think having kids be in school is such a critical part of our community,” said Jen Rombalski, the La Crosse County Health Department director. “It’s really important for wellness overall, but again, they have to be able to flex with where the risk levels are in our community in order to have that safe environment and that includes having the ability to move to some form of virtual classroom.”

There will be a National Guard testing site this Friday, July 10 at Logan High School in La Crosse.

Testing will take place from 10 am to 6 pm and includes a less invasive nasal swap with up to 400 kits available.

Anyone with any symptom is eligible for the free testing.
