UW-Eau Claire University Police hire 2 new officers
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire University Police hired two new officers who will start on campus in mid-October.
Vincent Xiong is the first Hmong officer to work for campus police and is the second person of color to work for the department, according to Chief Jay Dobson. The other person of color to work for campus police was a part-time officer in the mid-1990s.
Xiong says he came to the U.S. from Loas with his family in 1980 when he was 10-years-old. He now has a daughter who is a current UW-Eau Claire student.
Vanessa Evenson will join the two other female officers in the department made of 11 people. She grew up in Eau Claire and graduated from UW- Eau Claire in May.
Both Xiong and Evenson are completing their required training at Chippewa Valley Technical College.
“They both are very valuable hires,” Dobson says of the new officers. “They are assets to the campus.”
