Auto shop paints catalytic converters to prevent theft
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - The Eau Claire Police Department has partnered with Victory Automotive to prevent catalytic converter theft.
On Saturday, people could come to the auto shop for a drive thru event and have their catalytic converter painted for free.
“The idea is that if the converter is painted, if someone were to see that on your vehicle that would be a deterrent for them from taking it off and taking it into the recycler and saying ‘this is mine and I want money for it’,” said Jeff Matt, owner of Victory Automotive.
According to the Eau Claire Police Department, theft of catalytic converters has been a major issue in the area.
The auto shop uses high temp paint so it will not melt off with the heat.
“I feel like we’re meeting a need in the community with a lot of catalytic converter thefts happening all over the place,” said Matt. “We got the idea from the Minneapolis Police Department and thought we could do that as well. With minimal expense and a few volunteers we put it together and have had a great day so far.”
Victory Auto plans to continue offering catalytic converter painting to all customers in the future.
