2 women struck by lightning while visiting Horseshoe Bend

PAGE, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) – Two women in their early 20s were struck by lightning while they were visiting the iconic Horseshoe Bend in Arizona.

Horseshoe Bend is a landmark in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where the Colorado River sweeps around sandstone in the shape of a horseshoe.

According to the Page Police Department, other visitors called 911 to report that two people had been struck by lightning just before 4 p.m. on Monday.

Police said several people were at the park when a severe storm hit the area.

Firefighters, police officers, and National Park Service rangers provided first aid to the women while evacuating the area so two medical helicopters could land.

The women were airlifted to a Utah hospital, where their current conditions are unknown.

No other injuries were reported.

In a statement, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area said the women are 22 and 23 years old. One was visiting from the Netherlands, while the other is from Australia.
