Pedestrians in Peril: Crossing the street has become a dangerous decision in some U.S. cities
(InvestigateTV) — Crossing the street in some parts of America has become a dangerous decision as pedestrian deaths recently hit a 40-year high.
Since 2010, deaths increased a shocking 77%, peaking in 2022 at nearly 8,000.
Although 2023 saw a drop in pedestrian deaths, there were still nearly 1,000 more than in 2019.
Several factors create a deadly situation for pedestrians.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, a Governors Highway Safety Association report says a steep drop in traffic enforcement has enabled an increase in dangerous habits, including speeding and driving impaired.
At the same time, the report finds roads are designed to keep traffic moving quickly instead of their slower speeds, which are safer for people walking.
It’s a problem found in Phoenix, Arizona, which ranks among the deadliest for pedestrians in the US.
However, the city has vowed to make changes that prioritize its safety.
Investigative Reporter Amy Cutler takes an in-depth look at the solutions that can save lives.
