3-year-old girl in critical condition after being shot by her dad, police say

SURPRISE, Ariz. (KPHO/Gray News) — Police in Arizona say a toddler is fighting for her life after she was shot by her father Thursday evening.

Officers say they were called to a home near 184th Drive and Bell Road around 6:30 p.m. after neighbors reported a man acting erratically.

Police said the man, later identified as 48-year-old Dariusz Modrzejewski, also called 911 and started speaking about harming his family.

Crisis negotiators arrived at the home alongside SWAT crews. They entered the property after hearing a gunshot inside.

While in the home, first responders said they found a 3-year-old girl who was shot by Modrzejewski. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Modrzejewski was taken into custody. He is facing several aggravated assault charges, including use of a deadly weapon and assaulting a child under the age of 15.
