‘Absolutely heartbreaking’: Infant hospitalized with ‘serious’ injuries, babysitter charged
CLERMONT COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX/Gray News) - A 1-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after she suffered serious injuries under the care of her babysitter.
While the infant, Layla, recovers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the 37-year-old Amanda Greger faces up to 23 years in prison for charges of child endangering, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
Relatives describe it as an “attack” on the family.
“This is one of the most egregious things anyone can do on the earth,” Ricky Bilby, Layla’s uncle, said.
Layla was admitted to the hospital two weeks ago with brain bleeding, retinal hemorrhaging and other injuries.
Her uncle said, by the “grace of God,” she’s finally been moved out of the ICU.
“She is such a happy baby, so caring. To think this type of thing happened to her at such a young age is absolutely heartbreaking,” Bilby said.

Prosecutors said Greger was babysitting Layla and four other children on Nov. 9, when she mixed alcohol with marijuana and unprescribed muscle relaxers. When Layla’s mother came home, she found the infant and Greger covered in blood.
Layla was unresponsive and was taken to the hospital, and investigators later arrested Greger.
Prosecutors say Greger claimed not to remember what happened to harm Layla so badly.
Layla’s uncle said he doesn’t buy it.
“I believe she knew exactly what she was doing,” Bilby said. “You have to be a monster to be doing the kind of things that I believe happened to my niece.”
Greger was a close friend of Layla’s mother. Bilby said Layla’s mother is a single mom of four who worked third shift and often needed friends and family to help watch the kids overnight so she can spend time with them during the day.
“I remember her and my sister playing as 5-year-old kids. There’s a lifelong friendship here. You would assume you could trust someone like that,” he said.
A judge set Greger’s bond at $500,000, but Bilby believes she should face serious punishment and shouldn’t even have the possibility of being released.
“It’s almost like a terroristic attack to the family,” he said. “There’s children who have been affected for the rest of their lives. They will never be the same because of what happened that late night, early morning.”
A Clermont County Grand Jury indicted Greger on nine counts in total and prosecutors said they are devoted to making sure justice is served for Layla.
“My office is committed to fighting for justice for this child, who suffered immensely at the hands of the woman who was supposed to care for her,” Clermont County Prosecutor Mark Tekulve wrote in a press release.
Bilby said he is grateful for the community’s support as Layla fights to recover. He said a GoFundMe has been set up to support Layla’s mother while her daughter is in the hospital.
