Psychiatrist gives advice for athletes dealing with the loss of a teammate
ALMA CENTER, Wis. (WEAU) - We are now entering week three of high school football.
While many look forward to a game under the lights, the Alma Center community is still working on healing after the death of 17-year-old Adam Massman. He was the team’s quarterback who died after an injury in the week one game.
In the wake of the loss, several teams across western Wisconsin have spoken up, sharing their support for the community.
Alison Jones is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with Marshfield Clinic. She said events like these can make people feel worried about going back on the field. She says if that’s the case, speak up and talk with those around you.
“Really talking to your family, talking to your friends, to get those immediate, talking to coaches if there are concerns, and then reaching out beyond that, right? Talking if there’s counselors within the school, mental health professionals within the community, therapists or counselors, or even a primary care provider. There’s lots of resources available,” said Jones.
On Monday, we learned the Lincoln Football Team canceled their game this Friday, Sept. 4, against Assumption. The superintendent of the school district told us the future of the season is still unknown.
