Nightmare on 10th Street brings spooky fun to the Chippewa Valley
ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) - Before the month of October comes to an end, there’s a local Halloween display you won’t want to miss. It’s growing in popularity and is meant for everyone to enjoy.
“After everything is off and it’s dark, it’s a little creepy,” Kate Meyer with the Nightmare on 10th Street said.
They call the house the Nightmare on 10th Street.
“When my parents bought this house, they wanted to start doing a little bit of decorating,” Genevieve Rodriguez with Nightmare on 10th Street said. “They started with some small pumpkins with projections onto them where they story tell. Then it just grew from there.”
The display is a sight to see in the daylight, but wait until the lights go out. That’s when the magic, or should we say the scares, come alive.
“We’ve got our witch’s corner. We’ve got our little photo station. We got our Trailer of Terror,” Rodriguez said. “So there’s just a magnitude of different things you’ll see every single time you take a step.”
Rodriguez’s dad is the mastermind behind the display.
“Being able to come together and allow my dad to have this creative output, because he’s a very creative person, but kind of consolidating it to one time a year has been a way for us to continue to grow our love for it as well,” Rodriguez said.
Now, the whole family finds joy in it.
“You will see kids dancing over by the light show, just having fun, just being carefree,” Meyer said.
So each October, the Nightmare on 10th Street returns for thousands of visitors to enjoy, for free.
“A lot of what you can do for experiences in this day and age, there are costs associated,” Rodriguez said. “When you are in a place of being able to give back to the community in a way that also fills your cup and lets you express your creativity, you might as well take advantage of that.”
For Rodriguez and Meyer, it’s not about the displays; it’s about the memories, and those don’t come with a price tag.
“You can show up. You don’t have to plan it. You don’t have to budget for it,” Meyer said. “You can just come and enjoy it. That’s all you have to do. It’s just a fun thing.”
The Altoona Police Department also provided some slow-down signage and a speed-o-meter, encouraging people to take extra precautions in the area.
The Nightmare on 10th Street is open every single day up until Halloween from around 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. However, the family recommends stopping by between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays for some extra fun scares.
