A native of Buffalo, New York, Philip recently graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Journalism and Telecommunications. While a student at Ball State, Philip worked for NewsLink Indiana and Waking Up With Cardinal Weather as well as interning with WISH-TV in Indianapolis.
When he is not covering area sporting events, Philip loves exploring the Chippewa Valley on his bike or in a kayak.

Big Rivers boys hockey is back with a pair of thrilling matchups. Both Eau Claire North vs Menomonie and Eau Claire Memorial vs Hudson went down to the wire. In girls hockey action, ECA Stars defeated the Coulee Region Cyclones and the CFM Sabers topped Black River Falls. On the courts, Regis squared off with McDonell, Chippewa Falls took on North, and Osceola battled Altoona in prep boys action. In girls basketball, Eau Claire Memorial squared off with Rice Lake. UW-Eau Claire men’s wrestling pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind victory over UW-Whitewater.

The fall sports season has officially concluded in Western Wisconsin. UW-La Crosse football’s season came to an end in the quarterfinals of the NCAA D-III Football Tournament with a 55-42 loss to North Central (IL). In WIAC men’s hockey action, UW-Eau Claire held off UW-Stout in an overtime thriller. The Blugolds men’s basketball squared off with Northland College. In prep sports action, Chippewa Falls boys basketball took on Medford, Eau Claire North hosted Wausau West, and Fall Creek battled Augusta. In girls basketball, McDonell topped Colfax, Stanley-Boyd fell to Boyceville, Bloomer took on Spring Valley, Fall Creek squared off with Mondovi, Thorp battled Plum City/Elmwood, Osseo-Fairchild defeated Glenwood City, and Elk Mound took down Cadott. The ECA Stars earned their second straight home win over Northland Pines. Chippewa Falls hosted the Cardinal Invite in prep boys swimming.

Winter sports are beginning to get into full swing in Western Wisconsin. In prep boys hockey, Chippewa Falls squared off with Hudson, River Falls battled Eau Claire Memorial, Menomonie took down Rice Lake, and Eau Claire North fell to New Richmond. In prep boy’s basketball, Fall Creek hosted Durand-Arkansaw and Chippewa Falls traveled to Stevens Point. On the mats, Chippewa Falls took down Eau Claire Memorial as part of a three-way dual meet also with Sparta and Westby. UW-Eau Claire’s Carolyn Shult earned WIAC runner of the year.

The prep basketball season is starting to heat up. Eau Claire Memorial boys basketball is hoping that their two wins at the Oshkosh West Classic will be a springboard for a successful season. Osseo-Fairchild battled with Augusta in boys basketball, while Cadott hosted Flambeau in girls basketball action.

UW-La Crosse football continued its run in the NCAA DIII Football Tournament with a win over Aurora. Eau Claire Memorial earned the first place trophy at their annual Memorial Meltdown Tournament with their win over Notre Dame Academy. In college hockey, UW-Eau Claire took down St. Norbert. The Blugolds women’s hockey team fell on the road against Plattsburgh State. UW-Eau Claire men’s basketball earned the win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering, while the women fell just short against Wartburg. UW-Stout men’s basketball defeated Augsburg in double overtime.

UW-La Crosse dominated Minnesota Morris in the first round of NCAA Division 3 Football Tournament. UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire squared off in men’s and women’s hockey, while UW-Stout men’s hockey fell to UW-Superior. In college basketball, Concordia-Moorhead topped UW-Stout men’s team, but the Blue Devil women earned the win over Bethany Lutheran. The UW-Eau Claire men lost in their matchup against Babson, while the women defeated Bethel. At the NCAA Division 3 Cross Country Championsips, UW-La Crosse’s Ethan Gregg led the way earning the men’s title. The Eagles took second in the team race. UW-Eau Claire’s Mason Shea placed 39th to become the first Blugolds men’s runner to earn All-American honors since 2019. In the women’s race, Carolyn Shult was 5th, the highest finish in UW-Eau Claire history. UW-Stout’s McKayla Felton was 23rd to earn All-American honors.

Rice Lake football took down Grafton 28-20 to capture their third WIAA football title. UW-Eau Claire men’s soccer’s fantastic season came to an end in the NCAA Division 3 Men’s Soccer Tournament Round of 16 where they fell to St. Olaf. Blugold men’s hockey topped Northland College 6-1, and the Blugold women’s hockey team prepares for their matchup with UW-River Falls in a rematch of the WIAC title game.

NASCAR Cup Series Champion Ryan Blaney celebrated his victory with his sponsor, Menards, in Eau Claire. Aquinas won their third straight WIAA Division 5 Football Championship with their 32-14 victory over Wrightstown. Aquinas running back Kyle White ran for a Division 5 state final game record 240 yards in the victory. Edgar dominated Black Hawk/Warren (IL.) 36-6 as the Wildcats Karter Butt ran for a Division 7 record five touchdowns, and Stratford defeated Darlington on a walk-off field goal, 10-7. Lodi topped Luxemburg-Casco for the Division 4 state title. In prep girls basketball, Eau Claire North squared off with La Crosse Central, Eau Claire Memorial took on Holmen, Eau Claire Immanuel battled Spring Valley, and McDonell topped Neillsville.

Old rivalries ignited again in WIAC football action. UW-Stout topped UW-Eau Claire to claim the ‘War on 94′ trophy for an eighth straight season. Number 4 ranked UW-La Crosse hung on to win in a thriller over 7th ranked UW-River Falls. St. Croix Falls avenged their loss to Howards Grove in the 2022 state championship by defeating the Tigers in five sets to claim the 2023 WIAA Volleyball Division 3 state title. At the WIAA Swimming and Diving Division 1 Sectionals, a trio of Chippewa Valley swimmers qualified for the state championships. In Blugold hockey action, the men defeated Gustavus Adolphus 4-0, while the women took down St. Scholastica 8-1.UW-Eau Claire volleyball also earned the win in their season finale, sweeping Luther 3-0.

Area football looked to put themselves on the doorstep of the state championship next weekend. Boyceville fell to Edgar, Rice Lake took down Onalaska, Baldwin-Woodville topped Somerset, New Richmond squared off with Waunakee, Grantsburg took on Cameron, and Bangor upset Cashton. In 8-player football, Thorp defeated McDonell to punch their ticket to the state championship.

Area prep volleyball squads squared off as they looked to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Eau Claire Memorial fell behind 1-0 to River Falls. The Old Abes would dominate in Set 2 to even the score, but the Wildcats earned tight wins in Sets 3 and 4 to earn the victory. In Division 2, Rice Lake would win in convincing fashion over Waupaca to secure a place in Green Bay. In Division 3, McDonell squared of with reigning state runner-up, St. Croix Falls. The Macks would fall in 3 sets. In prep swimming, Hudson would claim the Big Rivers Conference title. Gabi Augustyn of Eau Claire Memorial, Hannah Miller of Rice Lake and Elise Gulick of River Falls were all 2 event winners.

Friday brought with it Level 2 of the prep football playoffs. Chippewa Falls fells to Neenah, Rice Lake took on Sparta, and Menomonie squared off with New Richmond. Area prep volleyball squads squared off as they fight for a chance at the sectional finals. Eau Claire Memorial squared off with Eau Claire North and Hudson took on River Falls in Division 1. Onalaska fell to Waunakee and Holmen took down Verona. In Division 2, Rice Lake swept Prescott. McDonell is headed back to the sectional finals after defeating Fall Creek and will square off the St. Croix Falls after they defeated Barron. In Division 4, Gilman fell to Prentice.

Prep sports action continues with boys soccer. Eau Claire Memorial took down DC Everest, Hudson defeated Wausau West, New Richmond took down Onalaska, Holmen squared off with River Falls, Baldwin-Woodville took on Rice Lake, Cumberland hosted Three Lakes/Phelps, and Arcadia to Aquinas. In Division 1 Cross Country Sectionals hosted at Menomonie, Brock Bjerke led a 1st through 4th finish for Hudson as they took the team title. Eau Claire Memorial, led by Will Pongonis also qualifed as a team for state. In the girls race, DC Everest’s Sarah Mlodik earned the win over New Richmond’s Marah Benedict. Menomonie, led by Lauren McCalla and Brooklyn Hoff won the team title. At the Division 2 Cross Country Sectionals in Rice Lake, Northwestern’s Morgan Martens, Baldwin-Woodville’s Ian Findlay, and Rice Lake’s Carter Kucko would finish 1st through 3rd to qualify as individuals. Bloomer dominated the team race with four runners in the top 10. In the girl’s race, Ciara Hartman led Bloomer to the team title. Adison Wilde of Baldwin-Woodville and Altoona’s Greta Peters qualified as individuals. In Division 3 Cross Country at Cadott, Gavin Stewart of Ladysmith took home the individual title. Andrew Thaler of McDonell finished 2nd to lead the Macks to the team title. In the girls race, Inez Schmidt of Cameron won the individual title, while Zoe Kenmitz of Bruce finished second. Regis, led by Carly Borst, took the team title. In WIAC football, UW-Eau Claire fell to UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Stout, UW-La Crosse edged UW-Oshkosh, and UW-River Falls dominated UW-Stevens Point. UW-Eau Claire men’s soccer defeated Luther, while the women’s team fell to UW-La Crosse.

Saturday marked a day full of regional finals in prep girls volleyball. In Division 1, Eau Claire Memorial hosted Superior, Eau Claire North took on D.C. Everest, and Chippewa Falls battled River Falls. In Division 2, Rice Lake took down Baldwin-Woodville and Prescott earned the upset win over Bloomer. McDonell squared off with Regis, St. Croix Falls defeated Phillips, and Barron took down Webster in Division 3. In Division 4, Eau Claire Immanuel fell to Marshfield Columbus Catholic, Athens earned the win over Pacelli, Prairie Farm fell to Prentice, and Gilman advanced over Rib Lake. Also, Altoona squared off with Appleton Xavier in the WIAA Team Tennis Championship.

The prep football playoffs have arrived in Wisconsin. In Division 1, Chippewa Falls traveled west to Hudson. In Division 2, Menomonie hosted River Falls and New Richmond took on Marshfield. In Division 3, top seeded Rice Lake squared off with La Crosse Logan and Hayward/Lac Courte Oreilles fell to Medford. While in Division 4, St. Croix Central downed Altoona, Ellsworth faced off with Baldwin-Woodville, and Bloomer failed to take down Mosinee. In 8-player football, McDonell withstood an early push from Siren, Gilman took down reigning champion Wausau Newman Catholic, and Thorp took on their neighbor to the east, Owen-Withee.
