EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Eau Claire Chamber Educational Foundation, Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Eau Claire Area School District, along with major sponsor Royal Credit Union, will hold the Real Life Academy - an interactive, hands-on, authentic experience for high school students that is designed to show them "real life" expenses and teach them responsible money management skills. Over 300 students from Altoona, Augusta, Fall Creek, Memorial, North and Regis High Schools have researched and selected their careers, participated in classroom lessons, and are ready to hone their money management and budgeting skills. Each student will enter The Real Life Academy with the profession they aspire to be ten years after graduation, along with a family status (single, married, divorced and with or without children) and a paycheck with one month's salary.
The students must visit 29 stations ranging from housing, transportation, groceries, gas, insurances and more. Several Chamber member businesses support the academy by sponsoring stations and providing employees to assist the students in their decision making. The major sponsor for the academy is Royal Credit Union. Chamber member volunteers, school faculty, administrators and school board members also participate in the academy.

Realizing that financial literacy is a crucial component to having an educated workforce in the community, the Chamber brought forward the idea of The Real Life Academy to area high schools and held the first academy in November 2004 with Eau Claire Memorial, North, Regis, and Altoona high schools. Since then, the academy has grown to include Augusta and Fall Creek high schools with interest from other schools. The Chamber holds two academies per year, in the fall and the spring, and approximately 700 students go through the two events. The Chamber believes that if the future workforce is equipped with the knowledge of how to manage their money, the community has the potential of becoming financially stronger.

The Real Life Academy will be held at The Halls @ The Lismore on Wednesday, November 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
