WAGNER TAILS: Promoting pet adoption
I'm Danielle Wagner, evening anchor at WEAU 13 News, and I have a passion for helping pets.
I have four rescue dogs of my own, and if I could adopt them all – I would! Since I can't, I'm partnering with area shelters and rescue groups to help you find your next pet.
Each Thursday, Wagner Tails will feature adoptable pets and information on how you can bring that pet home.
My passion for pets began in 2006 when I brought Cubbie home. He was a tiny yorkie mix, and I was 23 years old. He was the first dog I was responsible for all on my own, and he changed my life for the better.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get as much time with Cubbie as I hoped.
In July 2017, Cubbie was diagnosed him with a heart tumor. The vet said it was rare & incurable. I made the decision to let Cubbie live whatever life he had left to the fullest.
On January 7, 2018, Cubbie passed away peacefully at home. Eleven years with Cubbie was not enough time.
As hard as it was to lose Cubbie, I knew I’d adopt another dog. I knew Cubbie would want us to give another dog a loving home.
In February 2018, I started looking for adoptable pets. I found a rescue dog that reminded me of Cubbie, and I just felt it was meant to be.
Pippy came home with us, and three months later the woman who had fostered Pippy sent me a picture of another dog she was going to foster. He was the same age as Pippy, and it also felt meant to be.
So while it wasn’t planned, I have four rescue dogs! Teddy is six-year-old shih tzu mix adopted in October 2012. Missy is a six-year-old chihuahua mix adopted in April 2015. Pippy is a one-year-old Chihuahua mix adopted in February 2018. Alffy is a one-year-old Pomeranian mix adopted in May 2018.
During my recent adoptions, I was reminded of how many wonderful pets are looking for a loving home. But this truly all started with Cubbie more than a decade ago. He is the reason all four of my rescue dogs have a home, and he’s the inspiration for Wagner Tails.
Cubbie was loved and wanted every day of his life. I want that life for more pets.
Hopefully Wagner Tails is one small step in helping more pets find the homes they deserve. Let’s create happy "tails" together!
