COSTA RICA (NBC) -- Five family members from Westchester, New York were among 10 Americans killed when a plane crashed in Costa Rica, family members say.

It was supposed to be a special family vacation for a beloved family from Scarsdale.

The government of Costa Rica confirmed that 12 people were killed in a small plane crash just after noon Sunday. Five of the dead are all members of the same family.

The Steinberg family was on a private plane in Costa Rica registered with Nature Air.

There were a total of ten Americans and two local crew members on the aircraft, according to the Costa Rican Public Safety Ministry.

Recovery teams have been sorting through the wreckage. What caused it to fall from the sky is not yet known.

The Costa Rican government says it will launch an investigation into the cause of the crash starting Monday.
