Santa Cycle raises money for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Don't be surprised if you see a lot of Santas riding bikes through downtown Green Bay this weekend.

Santa Cycle raises money for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

Cyclists are encouraged to dress like Santa Claus. Everyone who signs up will get a blue Santa hat.

The ride is about seven miles long. In 2017, it raised about $8,000 for Children's Hospital.

Two fat tire bikes will be raffled off.

The event is organized by Action 2 Sports director Chris Roth. It's close to his heart. His daughter was a patient at Children's Hospital when she was a child.

"For years I was doing stuff for Children's Hospital before I had a family and one of the things I would tell people when we were asking them to donate was listen, this is an investment and it's almost like an insurance policy because you don't know who it's going to be," Roth says. "It's going to be somebody. It's pretty hard to find someone who doesn't have a connection to this great resource we have here in the state. It might be your kid. It might be your neighbor's kid. This is what I would tell people over and over before I even had children. And sure enough, my child went through Children's Hospital."

Chris says, "She had a bone infection when she was six years old. Diagnosed here. They started treating her for the infection. On a follow-up exam, they found a big tumor in her femur. So they sent us to Children's Hospital to have that taken care of. We're very fortunate that she's healthy today. It didn't stunt her growth. She's 5'10 1/2" which is great. But it's a very scary time when you start hearing the words cancer and leukemia thrown around, as a parent.

The cost to register is $35 for adults and $15 for people under 21.

You can register ahead of time or sign up the day of the race. Click here for registration information.

The race starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8.

In addition to the Santa hat, participants will get a beverage ticket for Badger State Brewing Company.
