LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A local animal shelter is letting you play with pets from the comfort of your home.

The Coulee Region Humane Society just installed a web-based, interactive pet toy called iPet Companion.

Here's how it works:

First, visit the iPet Companion website, and select the Coulee Region Humane Society from the list of shelters.

You might have to wait in line if others are playing with the cats.

Once it's your turn, you have two minutes to make different toys move, and rotate the camera to view different angles.

The system is installed in the Sunbeam Room, which houses several cats.

The humane society hopes it will increase adoption rates and keep the cats entertained.

"We do have awesome volunteers and staff that come in regularly and socialize and play with our animals, but people can log on to iPet at any time and play with them, so it's added enrichment and fun for them and then also helps us get our mission out there too so it's added exposure for our organization as a whole," said Samantha Luhmann, Community Outreach Coordinator at the Coulee Region Humane Society.

The Coulee Region Humane Society joins shelters in Janesville and Green Lake as the third shelter in Wisconsin to install iPet Companion.
