Casey's General store could find a home on Eau Claire's west side

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The city of Eau Claire could soon be home to a new Casey’s General store.

The store would be located on the city's west side, and comes after major back-and-forth in Altoona over the same convenience store chain.

After years of debate, the Altoona City council approved a plan last November for a Casey’s General store. Now the Eau Claire Plan Commission is taking on the same decision.

While one member says he expects this location to be received better, plans for an auto repair shop currently occupying the space are unclear.

On Monday, the Eau Claire Plan Commission will discuss a site plan for the over 4,500 square foot building that would take over the space currently occupied by Tailgates Sports Bar and Brill and Cali Style Rotary.

“I think we want to see that corridor develop as that population starts to push out to the west more and more,” says Terry Weld, a member of the plan commission.

Weld says because the site is already zoned commercial, it would be compatible for the convenience store.

Set to face North Clairemont Avenue, the new Casey’s General Store and boast 28 parking stalls, 14 gas pumps, and a carwash, which, over in the city of Altoona was scrapped after negotiations to approve a Casey’s there.

“I know there are some homes that are across the street on warden that would be adjacent to it, but nothing like what's happened in Altoona,” says Weld.

The years-long debate comprised concern over hazardous materials being dispensed near a senior center and family neighborhood in Altoona. In Eau Claire however, Weld says it will likely be a positive undertaking.

“I expect it to be received well,” says Weld.

Right now the site plan indicates that Tailgates, which is permanently closed, and Cali Style Rotary, which is currently open for business, would be demolished to make room for the convenience store. WEAU 13 News reached out to the auto repair shop about its future plans if the construction is approved, but has not heard back.

According to the Eau Claire Plan Commission, the development is to consist of only one phase which would is anticipated to start sometime in 2019.

The commission is set to discuss the Casey’s General store site plan at its next meeting on Monday.
