ALTOONA, Wis. (WEAU) -- Eau Claire County has shut down the Big Falls wading area near Fall Creek because of relatively-high bacteria levels.
The county's Parks & Forest Department made the announcement in a statement Wednesday morning. It said that water testing results confirmed the levels are unsafe, and the closure took effect immediately.
The Eau Claire City-County Health Department will retest the areas later on Wednesday. It will then notify the public when the levels are back within what it considers "acceptable health standards." The department's policy is to close the area when water samples show that bacteria levels are above what it considers to be a safe standard.
The Parks & Forest Department also said that Lake Altoona, Lake Eau Claire and Coon Fork Lake beaches are open. That's because they are within the health department's acceptable standards for swimming.
Any questions regarding the issue can be directed to the City-County Health Department at 715-839-4718.
