Division captain of field services announces run for Dunn Co. sheriff, current sheriff announces retirement

MENOMONIE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The division captain of field services for Dunn County has announced he is running for sheriff.

The position is being vacated this year with the retirement of Sheriff Dennis Smith at the end of this term.

Kevin Bygd made the announcement Monday.

Bygd has 28 years of experience with the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, starting as a jailer and dispatcher in 1989.

According to a release sent by his campaign, Bygd’s focus as sheriff would include battling meth and heroin, getting help for those with mental health issues and safe schools.
