Flynn Elementary teacher honored with Golden Apple

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- For the second straight year, WEAU 13 News is partnering with the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation to honor one educator from all 20 public schools in the district with a Golden Apple Award.

Tonight, we head to Flynn Elementary School in Eau Claire to honor kindergarten teacher Deb Schrententhaler, who helps nurture and build a solid foundation for her students.

Flynn Elementary Principal Adam Keeton says Schrententhaler brings a wealth of institutional knowledge to the classroom.

"Children create such strong bonds when they're younger and need a very nurturing and caring figure and in our school it seems like the staff that works with the younger children are really interested in young children and love young children and that's important,” said Schrententhaler.

"She takes advantage of every teachable moment in a classroom and they're everywhere, so everything from numbers, shapes, letters, sounds, simple addition and subtraction, she doesn't miss an opportunity to teach same thing to a student on top of that she's incredibly skilled at meeting students at where they are emotionally and educationally,” said Keeton.

Schrententhaler and Flynn Elementary School will receive a $1,000 grant from the Eau Claire Public Schools Foundation. Schrententhaler will get to use $500 to use in her classroom.
