La Crosse City Council votes in favor of permit for transitional home

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Thursday night the La Crosse City Council met with a packed agenda, including deciding on a conditional use permit for the Tomah VA.

In an 11 to 2 vote, the city council approved a conditional use permit to allow the Tomah VA to use a house donated by Dave and Barb Erickson as a group home.

The house, located on Farnam Street on the southside of La Crosse, will be used by eight veterans at a time as a transitional home.

"What a great opportunity to be in such a beautiful home. The purpose of the program is to help veterans transition back to community life, back to their families, back to normal living conditions. What greater way to do that, what better way to do that than to be in a home," said Tomah VA Medical Center Director Victoria Brahm.

Brahm says the next step is working on a lease agreement for the home and to do slight modifications so the home meets federal standards.

She says it will most likely be a few months before the veterans move in.
